Alignment of Archival Objects to RiC-O

The hierarchy of DDB’s archival objects follows the Encoded Archival Description (EAD). The DDB-EAD hierarchy types are divided into two main types: “Tektonik” describes the organization of all holdings in a given archive, while “Findbuch” (Finding Aid) describes the organization of archival resources within a single holding. These are mapped to their respective classes in Record in Context Ontology (RiC-O). RiC-O is an owl ontology developed by Expert Group on Archival Description (EGAD) that provides a unified formal specification to encompass existing archival standards with provisions for integration to the Linked Open Data (LOD) ecosystem. The hierarchical structure of archival record groups in RiC-O is modeled with named individuals which are members of the class rico:RecordSetType, which are then connected to an archival object via rico:hasRecordSetType. Such modeling addresses flexibility required by the use case of the DDB.
